Maine Mass Shooting: Suspect, Who Killed 18 People, Found Dead

Maine: In the latest development regarding the 48-hour lethal shooting rampage that took place in Lewiston, a city in the US state of Maine, the suspect in the mass killing was found dead on Friday. As reported by ABC News, an unnamed law enforcement source has confirmed that the suspect, Robert Card, was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Furthermore, the Associated Press revealed that a note, addressed to his son, was found at a residence associated with the suspect. While officials believe it to be a suicide note, it does not offer a specific motive for the shooting.

Maine Mass Shooting

Robert Card, a former military reservist in the US Army, opened fire inside a bowling alley and then went to a nearby bar to shoot 18 people. 18 people were killed in the shooting incident. The deceased ranged in age from 14 to 76.

The city police launched a massive manhunt to nab the accused, a lockdown was also imposed in the city which was later lifted on Friday.

As a sign of condolence, President Joe Biden has ordered all US flags to be flown at half-staff until sunset on Monday.

Additionally, authorities discovered Card’s cellphone inside the residence, and a firearm was found in a vehicle he had abandoned.

Maine Mass Shooting: Suspect Heard Voices

The deceased suspect’s relatives stated that he discussed hearing voices with them and became more focused on the bowling alley and bar. Earlier, Card was taken by cops after military officials complained of him acting erratically.

Card began making statements about hearing voices and expressing a desire to harm fellow soldiers during their service at a military base earlier this year. Subsequently, he spent several weeks in a hospital, as reported by law enforcement officials to CNN.

Card’s sister-in-law, Katie O’Neill, told CNN that he does not have a long history of mental health issues. “This is something that was an acute episode. This is not who he is,” “He is not someone who has had mental health issues for his lifetime or anything like that,” she said.

Apart from a 2007 arrest on an alleged driving under the influence charge, law enforcement sources have indicated that the suspect is not listed in the ATF or FBI databases.

Robert Card legally owns multiple firearms and possesses a residence situated on hundreds of acres of land in Maine, CNN reported citing sources.
