Beijing: At least 25 people were killed after a massive fire broke out at a coal company’s office building in China’s northern Shanxi province, reported Reuters citing state media. The fire broke out at 6:50 a.m. at the four-story Yongju Coal Industry Joint Building in the top coal-producing hub of Shanxi.

CCTV, the state broadcaster, initially reported that the extensive flames resulted in the deaths of at least 11 people and injuries to as many as 51. Subsequently, the reported death toll from the accident was revised upward twice.

Notably, recent fire incident have sparked public outrage in the neighbouring country. In April, a fire engulfed a hospital in Beijing, resulting in 29 deaths and prompting criticism of local authorities on social media.

China’s coal producers are facing scrutiny due to a series of recent accidents in mines. This has impacted production as mines suspend operations for safety inspections.
