‘Problem Of Compatibility Between Islamic Culture, European Values’: Giorgia Meloni

Rome: Italy Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni is again making headlines over her controversial remark in which she claimed that the Islamic culture is not entirely compatible with European civilisation. “I believe that there is a problem of compatibility between Islamic culture and the values and rights of our civilisation,” she said, Hindustan Times reported. “The Islamic cultural centers in Italy are financed by Saudi Arabia where Sharia is in force. In Europe there is a very Islamisation process distant from the values of our civilisation,” she added.

Meloni’s remarks come after she hosted a political festival organised by her party – Brothers of Italy party – in Rome. The event was also attended by which had UK’s Prime Minister Rishi Sunak in attendance.

Rishi Sunak stated to advocate for global reforms to the asylum system and warned that the surging number of refugees could “overwhelm” certain regions of Europe.

He cautioned that “enemies” are deliberately “driving people to our shores to try and destabilise our societies”.

“If we do not tackle this problem, the numbers will only grow. It will overwhelm our countries and our capacity to help those who actually need our help the most. If that requires us to update our laws and lead an international conversation to amend the post-war frameworks around asylum, then we must do that,” Sunak said.

Apart from Sunak, SpaceX chief and billionaire businessman Elon Musk was also present at the event.

During the event musk stated that immigration is not enough to combat population shrinking. “Immigration isn’t enough to combat population shrinking. There is value in cultures, we don’t want Italy as a culture to disappear, we want to maintain a reasonable cultural identity of those countries or they won’t be those countries,” Musk added.

Giorgia Meloni Earlier Remarks On Islam

It is worth noting that it is not the first time that Meloni has made a controversial reference to Islam. In 2019, she wrote a controversial a foreword to the ‘First Report on Europe’s Islamisation’. She wrote: “Because we fear the ‘prophecy’ of [Michel] Houellebecq, if Europe, and Italy which concern us closely, do not decide to have policies and tools to preserve itself, may inevitably turn into reality.” It was presented by the Farefuturo Foundation think-tank.

As per reports published in the Middle East Eye, Italy does not recognise Islam legally and neither support the construction of Muslim religious buildings in the country.

Notably, present-day Italy, recognises the Catholic Church as an independent and sovereign authority. The government has signed contracts of recognition with as many as 13 religious communities including Jews and Hindus, on the contrary Muslims lack similar legal recognition.
