Plateau: At least 16 people were killed in an attack in the north-central state of Plateau on Monday (Local Time), news agency AFP reported, citing the Nigerian army. The attack occurred in Mushu village. Notably, clashes between herders and farmers are very common in the region and have claimed several lives in recent years. Plateau is one of the ethnically and religiously diverse hinterland states in Nigeria’s Middle Belt, where inter-communal conflict is not a new phenomenon. These conflicts have claimed several lives in the region in recent years.
In May of this year, clashes between farmers and herders claimed more than 100 lives in Plateau.
The bloody violence, termed an ethno-religious conflict, mainly occurs between Muslim herders and Christian farmers. However, expanding agriculture is also a major factor in these bloody conflicts.
