New Delhi: A moderate intensity earthquake, measuring 5.6 on Richter Scale, hit parts of northeastern region of India and adjoining Bangladesh, officials said. Tremors were also felt in various parts of West Bengal. West Bengal Disaster Management Department said that as of now, no damage has been reported from anywhere in the state. “We are yet to get the final report. As of now, there is no report of any damage due to the quake,” an official told PTI.

Bangladesh is located in an earthquake-prone zone. According to experts, mild to moderate earthquakes are felt in Bangladesh due to the opposing movements of the Burmese Plate and the Indian Plate. They also say that there is a significant accumulation of energy at the junction of these two plates, which is seeking a way to be released, causing frequent earthquakes.
