Ghaziabad has been part of the most polluted cities in the world and the air quality has been questionable for a long time. The city’s Municipal Corporation has now allocated a whopping Rs 173 crore for the enhancement of air quality and waste management improvement among other civic infrastructure projects.
New Delhi: The Ghaziabad Municipal Corporation met for a meeting on Thursday, during which the officials have decided to spend about Rs 173 crores to improve various civic infrastructural issues in the city including air quality, road repairs and waste management. This money has been allocated for this financial year; the officials have said that about Rs 126 crores will be utilised from the Central Government’s 15th Finance Commission Fund, Rs 33 crores will be used from the infrastructural development funds and the rest will be designated especially for improvement of air quality in the city.
Air quality has been a major issue in Delhi, Ghaziabad and many other cities of India; in the list of the most polluted cities of the world by Switzerland-based IQAir, Ghaziabad ranked second in 2021. However, in 2022, situations improved and the city was a the 11th position but still there is a lot of scope for improvement.
Ghaziabad Municipal Commissioner Statement
The Municipal Commissioner of Ghaziabad, Nitin Gaur has said that vital road repairs as per the directive of the Commission for Air Quality Management’s (CAQM) contribute to pollutant dispersion, such as PM10 and therefore are important for air quality enhancement. The commissioner has also said that apart from this, there are some air quality initiatives that will adopt the Miyawaki approach, that emphasizes on greenery. The road repair initiative includes 18 road sections across Ghaziabad.
The Municipal Commissioner has also added that The Swachh Bharat Abhiyaan will play an important role in supporting these civil infrastructural activities and efforts of the corporation; 350 new CNG vehicles are also being introduced that will come within two months of the completion of the procurement process.
Municipal Corporation’s Focus On Waste Management
Apart from making an effort to improve the air quality, the corporation is also going to focus on improving waste management in the city; about Rs 106 crore has been earmarked to manage solid waste management from which Rs 48.53 crore will be used for establishing transfer sections at Vasundhara, Madhupan Mapudham, Jhandpur and Sahibabad. These stations will be designed as secondary waste collection hubs their collective capacity of daily solid waste will be 200-300 metric tonnes and for the processing operations of solid waste, Rs 23.4 crore has been designated.
It is to be noted that the city generates about 1400 metric tonnes of solid waste daily and lacks a comprehensive scientific waste management facility; construction activities are yet to begin for the proposed waste to energy plants in Hapur and Galand districts.
Funds Allocated For Cleanliness
Along with air quality enhancement and waste management improvement, mechanized road sweeping of majority city roads of about 148 KM is also part of the plan; this is being done to improve the cleanliness and upkeep of the roads and about Rs 6.3 crore as been allocated for night sweeping activities in the commercial markets.
