Jerusalem: When the world is celebrating the New Year, there are still ‘dark days’ in Israel and Gaza, with people living in terror. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated on Saturday that the major border zone between the Gaza Strip and Egypt should be under his country’s control, as he predicted that the war in the Palestinian enclave and on other regional fronts would continue for many more months.
The Israeli Prime Minister held a press conference on the 13th week of Israel’s war Hamas, which has stoked violence in the occupied West Bank and getting support from Iran-backed groups in Lebanon, Syria, Iraq and Yemen.
“The Philadelphi Corridor – or to put it more correctly, the southern stoppage point (of Gaza) – must be in our hands. It must be shut. It is clear that any other arrangement would not ensure the demilitarisation that we seek,” he said.
Israel has cleared its intentions to destroy Hamas militants in the Gaza Strip and deradicalize the region to prevent any repeat incidents like the cross-border killing and kidnapping spree by the Palestinian militant group on October 7 last year, that sparked the war.
“The war is at its height. We are fighting on all fronts. Achieving victory will require time. As the (IDF) chief of staff has said, the war will continue for many more months,” Netanyahu said.
Netanyahu further mentioned a unique threat to directly attack Iran in response to near-daily exchanges of fire across the Israel-Lebanon border. “If Hezbollah expands the warfare, it will suffer blows that it has not dreamed of – and so too Iran,” Netanyahu said without elaborating.
