Surrey: A British Columbia court sentenced a 40-year-old Indian-origin man for brutally stabbing his wife to death. Accused Navinder Gill killed Harpreet Kaur Gill in December 2022. The homicide investigation team stated that the Gill cannot apply for parole for 10 years.
In a statement, Integrated Homicide Investigation Team (IHIT) spokesperson Sergeant Timothy Pierotti stated that incidents of intimate partner violence have a profound effect on families and communities
“We’re thankful for the great work being done by Surrey RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) Victim Services and the Ministry of Children and Family Development who continue to support the family and the community,” Pierotti said.
The Gruesome Murder
Gill attacked his wife at their residence in Surrey, shortly after 9 pm on December 7, 2022. The 40-year-old woman sustained multiple stab wounds and died in a hospital despite life-saving efforts.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team arrested Navinder on December 15. The accused was charged with second-degree murder on December 16, 2022.
A Mistake
In June 2023, Navinder pleaded guilty to his wife’s murder. His lawyer stated in the court that his client had made a mistake.
“He was very remorseful in court today. It’s a very tragic incident, that’s all I can say,” lawyer Gagan Nahal said.
Navinder and Harpreet had three children – all below 10 years – and the deceased worked as a teacher.
Harpreet’s parents and brother lives in in India are concerned about the future of their grandchildren. Her parents are seeking legal advice in regards to the children’s custody.
